In the Milliy sertifikat history exam (45 tasks, 90 minutes) dates appear in three ways: putting events in chronological order, identifying a ruler or event from a source excerpt and choosing the true statements about it, and writing a year or a name yourself in the open a/b tasks. You do not need hundreds of loose dates for this, but a chain of 10-15 anchor dates per period. The exam is in Uzbek; below are each task type, worked examples and the usual mistakes.
Where dates appear and what they are worth
Tasks 1-22 are political history, 23-29 social and economic history, 30-32 culture. Uzbekistan's history and world history are mixed. Many of the 3.2-point tasks are exactly the ones that combine several dates or clues.
| Tasks | Type | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1-32 | Single answer: chronology, sources, true statements, cause and effect | 10 at 1.3 + 15 at 2.2 + 7 at 3.2 |
| 33-35 | Matching (event - date, person - state) | 2.2 each |
| 36, 40-45 | Open a/b: year, name, term | 1.1 + 1.1 |
| 37-39 | Open a/b, harder | 1.5 + 1.7 |
Chronology tasks
You usually get 4-6 events and choose the right order. The options are built to look alike: often only two neighbouring events are swapped.
- Write a year (or century) next to each event and then order them - do not do it in your head.
- Find the surest first and last events: that removes half the options at once.
- Example: the Roman Republic (509 BC), Marathon (490), the start of the Peloponnesian War (431), Gaugamela (331), the destruction of Carthage (146), the Spartacus revolt (73). The most common slip is swapping 509 and 490.
- Example: the Tahirid state (821), Nasr ibn Ahmad's charter for Movarounnahr (875), Mahmud of Ghazni on the throne (998), the Karakhanids take Bukhara (999), Malik-Shah in Samarkand (1089). 998 and 999 are a year apart - that pair is the trap.
BC dates and centuries
- In BC dates the bigger number is earlier: 509 BC comes before 490 BC.
- Century: add 1 to the hundreds. 1040 is the 11th century, 1924 the 20th. A round hundred (1500) belongs to the previous century: 1500 is the 15th.
- 331 BC is the 4th century BC - same rule.
- There is no year 0 between BC and AD: from 49 BC to AD 1 is 49 years.
Working with a historical source
You get an excerpt and pick the true statements about its person or event. First mark the key clues: century, place, title, a famous phrase.
Example: «"As long as I live, I am the wall of the Bukhara province", he said, and refused to rebuild the wall around the Bukhara oasis» (a 10th-century source). This is Ismoil Somoniy. True: he ruled 892-907; in 900 near Balkh he defeated the Saffarid Amr ibn Layth; his mausoleum is in Bukhara.
Traps: «he built the Mir-i Arab madrasa in Bukhara» - a 16th-century building; «he surrendered to the Karakhanids in 999» - the dynasty's late, final period. A date moves the statement to another era.
True-statement and combination tasks
- You get 5-6 statements and choose the numbers of the true ones («1, 2, 3»). Mark each one yes or no separately.
- One confident «no» removes every option that contains its number.
- In Euler-Venn tasks (only A, only B, both) find the shared features first - there are usually fewest of them.
- In matching (33-35) start with the most obvious pair: the remaining choices shrink.
Open tasks: writing a year or a name
- The condition describes one event, a) and b) ask two things about it. For example: «In 1040 near Merv the Seljuks crushed the army of Mas'ud of Ghazni. a) Name of the battle? - Dandanakon. b) One of the winning Seljuk leaders? - Tughril Beg (or Chaghri Beg).»
- Write the year in digits (1924); the word «year» is not needed.
- Write names and terms in their standard Uzbek form: «Qutadğu bilig», «vaqf», «amlok».
- The parts are marked separately: if you do not know b), still write a).
How to memorise dates
- A period table: for each period (antiquity, the Middle Ages, the khanates, the 19th century, the 20th century, independence) 10-15 anchor dates.
- A chain of cause, event and result: 1924 national-territorial delimitation → the Uzbek SSR is formed → its capital is Samarkand in 1925-1930 and Tashkent from 1930.
- Parallels: write Uzbek and world events of the same century side by side.
- Spaced review: dates on flashcards, revisited after 1, 3 and 7 days.
- After every mock test add the dates you got wrong to the table.
A plan for the 90 minutes
45 tasks in 90 minutes is about 2 minutes each. Chronology and source tasks can take up to 3 minutes, a plain factual question one. Give 55-60 minutes to 1-35, 20-25 minutes to the open 36-45 and 5-10 minutes to checking.
