The open part of the Milliy sertifikat (National Certificate) Chemistry exam is almost entirely calculation problems. If you know a handful of core formulas well, most of them can be solved the same way.
Exam structure
In the official sample: 1-35 are closed test questions (10 worth 1.3 points, 25 worth 2.2 points) and 36-45 are open tasks (a) 1.5 + b) 1.7 points). 100 raw points in total, 150 minutes.
Formulas you must know
| Quantity | Formula |
|---|---|
| Amount of substance | ν = m / M |
| Gas volume (STP) | V = ν · 22.4 L |
| Number of particles | N = ν · 6.02 · 10²³ |
| Mass fraction | ω = m(substance) / m(solution) · 100 % |
| Molar concentration | C = ν / V(solution, L) |
How to solve a reaction problem
- Write the reaction equation and balance the coefficients.
- Find the amount (mol) of the given substance.
- Use the ratio of the coefficients to find the amount of the substance you need.
- Convert the amount into the quantity asked for (mass, volume) and check the units.
Theory questions
- The periodic table: how properties change across groups and periods.
- Types of chemical bond: ionic, polar and non-polar covalent, metallic.
- Oxidation states and redox reactions.
- Organic chemistry: classes, isomers, characteristic reactions.
