The pencil: a short history of an ordinary object
The story usually begins in the 1560s in Borrowdale, a valley in the north-west of England, where an unusually pure deposit of graphite was found. Local shepherds are said to have used lumps of it to mark their sheep. At the time, nobody understood what the substance was; it was widely believed to be a form of lead, and the name ‘lead pencil’ has survived ever since, even though modern pencils contain no lead at all.
Borrowdale graphite was so valuable that the mine was guarded, and at times flooded deliberately to prevent theft. Because the deposit was solid, it could be sawn into thin sticks, which were then wrapped in string or sheepskin to keep the user’s fingers clean. Later, craftsmen began to insert the sticks into hollowed-out pieces of wood, creating something close to the pencil we recognise today.
Writing and Speaking
Not just a score. A breakdown.
Every essay is marked on the four IELTS criteria: what worked, what cost you marks and what to do for the next band.

Writing and Speaking scores are estimates and don’t guarantee an official result.

Recorded Listening
Listening parts are pre-recorded with distinct voices - not a robot reading the script.
Server timer and autosave
Time is kept on the server, so a page refresh can’t change it. If your connection drops, answers stay on your device and are sent later.
Privacy
Speaking audio is never sent to or stored on our servers. We don’t sell your data and there are no ads.
Scoring
How your score is calculated - in the open.
You should know where your result comes from. These are the rules Trylab uses - move the sliders and check.
Listening and Reading are converted to a band with the 40-question table. Shorter practice sets are scaled to 40 first.
Frequently asked questions
How does Trylab work?
You pick an exam and sit the test with a real time limit. Listening, Reading and multiple-choice questions are marked instantly; Writing and Speaking are scored against the IELTS criteria. The results page shows every answer you gave and explains your mistakes.
How close are the tests to the real exam?
The format, question types, timing and interface follow the structure of the official exams. The questions are original material written by the Trylab team, not official exam papers.
How accurate is the AI scoring?
The AI works from the public IELTS band descriptors and gives an estimated band. It cannot guarantee your official result, but it shows exactly which criterion is holding you back.
What do I get on the free plan?
4 tests a month, every test marked “free” (one in each language), automatic marking and your results history. No card required.
How do payments work?
Pay with Payme, Click or a bank card. Paying for 3 or 6 months is cheaper. Cancel any time - your plan stays active until the end of the paid period.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Trylab runs in the browser on laptops, tablets and phones. Speaking needs a microphone; we recommend Chrome or Safari.
