The Milliy sertifikat geography exam has 45 tasks in 150 minutes: 1-32 are single-answer multiple choice (1.3, 2.2 or 3.2 points), 33-35 are matching (2.2 points) and 36-45 are open a/b tasks answered with a word or a number. The paper is worth 100 raw points. Many of those points come from calculations rather than memory: map scale, time difference, temperature and pressure with height, population density. Below are the structure, the topics and a worked example of each calculation type.
Exam structure
The format follows the geography test specification and sample paper of the Agency for Assessment of Knowledge and Competences.
| Tasks | Type | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1-32 | Single answer: 10 at 1.3, 18 at 2.2, 4 at 3.2 | 65.4 |
| 33-35 | Matching: answers from one shared list (A-F) | 3 × 2.2 = 6.6 |
| 36-39, 43, 44 | Open a/b, harder | a) 1.5 + b) 1.7 |
| 40-42, 45 | Open a/b, short answer | a) 1.1 + b) 1.1 |
| Total | 45 tasks, 150 minutes | 100 |
Topics on the paper
Each position in the specification belongs to a topic; physical and economic geography are mixed:
- History of geography and maps: order of discoveries, scale, coordinates, time zones.
- The geographic envelope: atmosphere layers, temperature and pressure, winds, climate types, hydrosphere.
- Continents and oceans: relief, climate, natural zones, rivers and lakes, currents.
- Central Asia and Uzbekistan's nature: relief, climate, water resources, natural zones.
- Natural resources and geoecology: minerals, resource endowment, environmental problems.
- Population geography: size, density, natural increase, urbanisation, migration.
- World economy and Uzbekistan's economy: industries, location factors, transport, trade.
Scale and distance
At 1:2,500,000, 1 cm on the map is 2,500,000 cm = 25 km. If two cities are 10.6 cm apart on the map, they are 10.6 × 25 = 265 km apart on the ground.
For an area, convert each side to km first, then multiply. A 4 cm × 2 cm field at 1:50,000: 1 cm = 0.5 km, sides 2 km and 1 km, area 2 km². The usual mistake is multiplying the map's cm² by the linear scale.
Time and longitude
- The Earth turns 360° in 24 hours: 15° = 1 hour, 1° = 4 minutes.
- Further east the clock is ahead, further west it is behind.
- Example: point A is at 45° E and point B at 75° E. When local time at A is 10:00, B is 30° × 4 = 120 minutes ahead, so 12:00.
- Zone time follows the zone's central meridian. Uzbekistan's zone has the 75° central meridian.
Temperature and pressure with height
- In the troposphere temperature falls about 6 °C per 1000 m. Example: +27 °C at 600 m, a pass at 3100 m: difference 2500 m, 2.5 × 6 = 15 °C, answer +12 °C.
- Pressure falls about 1 mm of mercury per 10.5 m. Example: 742 mm at 200 m, at 1250 m: difference 1050 m, 1050 : 10.5 = 100 mm, answer 642 mm.
- Watch out: when heights are given above sea level, subtract the height of the starting point.
Density and natural increase
- Density = population : area. 3,600,000 people on 12,000 km²: 300 people/km².
- Natural increase (‰) = birth rate (‰) - death rate (‰). With 24 ‰ and 5 ‰ the increase is 19 ‰.
- In people per year: a population of 2,000,000 at 19 ‰ grows by 2,000,000 × 19 : 1000 = 38,000.
- Do not mix per mille and per cent: 19 ‰ = 1.9%.
Writing answers to open tasks
- Parts a) and b) are marked separately: even if b) is hard, always write a).
- Part b) usually builds on a) - check a) before moving on.
- Give the answer in the requested unit: km, km², °C, mm, hours:minutes.
- Word answers (a river, a city, a term) should use the standard spelling.
Preparation plan
- Spend 15-20 minutes a day with a map: continents, oceans, Uzbekistan's regions, major rivers and mountains.
- Keep a notebook of calculation types (scale, time, temperature, pressure, density) with the formula and one example each.
- Sit one full paper a week in 150 minutes and tag your mistakes by topic.
- In economic geography learn cause and effect: why a plant is located where it is (raw materials, water, energy, transport, labour).
